Skilled interventions

  • Assess respiratory status against the ordered oxygen target and titrate oxygen per order; avoid over-oxygenation in the CO₂-retainer.
  • Administer scheduled/PRN bronchodilators and the steroid taper and document the response; provide pulmonary hygiene.
  • Recognize a recurring exacerbation early with parameter-based escalation.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative inhaler/spacer and nebulizer technique, the green/yellow/red action plan, oxygen safety, pursed-lip breathing, and smoking-cessation support, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on oxygen-tubing checks, energy-conservation assistance, and prompt reporting of increased dyspnea or sputum change, with documented understanding.
