Acute sensory change with weakness or a bowel/bladder change — a new sensory level, ascending numbness, or saddle anesthesia with retention/incontinence — neurologic emergency (cord compression / acute polyneuropathy): escalate/transfer.
Sudden hemibody sensory loss — activate the stroke pathway (route to Neurological).
Rapidly ascending weakness/numbness (possible Guillain-Barré) with any breathing difficulty — emergency evaluation/transfer.
Injury from lost protective sensation — a burn or deep breakdown on an insensate area, or signs of infection — escalate and revise the protective plan.
