Fluid balance is a frequent skilled focus that the Nutrition module’s eating-and-weight view does not fully cover. In older adults, dehydration is a common and dangerous driver of decompensation — precipitating acute kidney injury, delirium, hypotension, and falls — and its correction often requires IV fluids, a covered skilled procedure, with intake/output and electrolyte surveillance. Conversely, over-hydration in a resident with heart failure or renal impairment must be avoided. The skilled work is the recognition of a fluid-electrolyte problem, the administration and monitoring of ordered fluids, and the daily balance judgment.
This module proves, on the days it applies, that skilled IV-fluid administration, fluid-status observation, or management of a fluid-electrolyte problem was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The hydration assessment is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed. Oral-intake and weight detail live in the Nutrition reference.
