5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Administer and monitor oxygen within the ordered parameters and titrate per order; document the SpO₂ response.
  • Perform ordered respiratory treatments, suctioning, and tracheostomy care with pre/post assessment.
  • Provide skilled observation of the unstable respiratory status with parameter-based escalation; reinforce aspiration precautions where indicated.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative inhaler/nebulizer technique, incentive spirometry, oxygen safety, and warning signs, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on positioning, oxygen-tubing checks, and early reporting of respiratory change, with documented understanding.
