1. Purpose and clinical relevance

Diabetes and metabolic disorders commonly support a skilled Part A day: a resident requiring insulin administration with sliding-scale or titration judgment, recovery from diabetic ketoacidosis or a hyperosmolar state, a new insulin start needing daily titration and teaching, and thyroid or electrolyte disturbance. The skilled element is the glucose monitoring paired with clinical judgment — interpreting the trend, adjusting within the ordered parameters, and recognizing hypo- or hyperglycemia before it becomes an emergency.

The purpose of this module is to prove, for each billed day, that skilled glycemic observation, insulin administration, teaching, or management of the plan was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The endocrine content is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed. Disease-specific glycemic crises route to the Diabetes overlay.
