5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Deliver the specialized or post-operative oral care and mucositis regimen and assess the mucosa; tie the oral status to intake and infection risk.
  • Provide skilled oral care for the dependent/NPO/tube-fed resident per the aspiration-prevention protocol.
  • Recognize oral infection or post-operative bleeding/swelling and escalate; coordinate pain and nutrition support as ordered.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative the oral care regimen, mucositis and post-operative-mouth care, and warning signs, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on the oral-care protocol (especially for the dependent/tube-fed resident) and reporting oral lesions, bleeding, or reduced intake, with documented understanding.
