The eye is a legitimate reason for a skilled SNF course. After ophthalmic surgery — cataract extraction, retinal-detachment repair, glaucoma surgery, or a corneal procedure — a resident needs a specific eye-drop regimen administered and taught, often strict post-operative positioning (a retinal repair may require face-down or specific head positioning), and skilled observation for complications such as infection or raised intraocular pressure. An acute vision change (a retinal event, a stroke-related visual field cut, or acute angle-closure glaucoma) is a time-critical skilled finding, and the dependent or neurologically impaired resident needs skilled eye protection.
This module proves, on the days it applies, that skilled eye care, observation, or teaching was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The eye assessment is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed and the Section B vision linkage added.
