5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Administer the ophthalmic regimen with correct technique and enforce the required positioning and shield; document the operative-eye findings.
  • Provide skilled observation for a post-operative complication and for an acute vision change with prompt escalation.
  • Protect the cornea in the dependent/neuro resident (lubrication, taping/closure per order) and assist safe mobility with impaired vision.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative eye-drop technique, the positioning and shield requirements, activity restrictions, and the warning signs of a complication, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on safe mobility for the visually impaired resident, corneal-protection measures, and prompt reporting of eye pain/discharge/vision change, with documented understanding.
