5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Set up, monitor, and troubleshoot CPAP/BiPAP per order and document tolerance, adherence, and any desaturation.
  • Provide skilled observation of the sleep-wake pattern and escalate a reversal as a possible delirium/acute-change sign; implement sleep hygiene and safety measures.
  • Address contributing factors (pain, dyspnea, nocturia) and avoid an unnecessary hypnotic.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative CPAP/BiPAP use and care, sleep-hygiene measures, and the importance of the device, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on device support, reporting apneas/desaturation and a sleep-wake change, and non-pharmacologic sleep measures, with documented understanding.
