5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Recognize and immediately manage anaphylaxis (epinephrine, airway, EMS) and severe drug reactions with prompt escalation.
  • Administer IVIG/immunotherapy with premedication and reaction monitoring; manage immunosuppression infection precautions.
  • Provide heightened infection surveillance in the immunosuppressed resident, recognizing the blunted response.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative allergy avoidance and the anaphylaxis action plan (and auto-injector use where relevant), immunosuppression infection precautions, and warning signs, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on infection precautions for the immunosuppressed resident and reporting any reaction, fever, rash, or subtle change immediately, with documented understanding.
