The ear is a legitimate reason for, or a real complicating factor in, a skilled SNF course. After otologic or ENT surgery — a mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty, or cochlear implant — a resident needs skilled post-operative care, precautions, and complication surveillance. Acute vertigo (vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, BPPV, or a Meniere flare) is a skilled scenario because of its fall risk and the need for safety management. And a hearing deficit is not cosmetic in a skilled stay: it blocks the teaching, communication, and participation the skilled plan depends on, and an unaddressed deficit can masquerade as confusion.
This module proves, on the days it applies, that skilled ear/vestibular observation, post-operative care, or communication-enabling intervention was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The ear assessment is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed and the Section B hearing linkage added.
