5. Skilled interventions and teaching

Skilled interventions

  • Provide post-operative ear care and enforce the surgeon’s precautions; document the operative-site findings and complication surveillance.
  • Manage acute vertigo with intensified fall precautions and safe mobility; screen for a central cause and escalate.
  • Optimize the hearing aid and use communication strategies so the deficit does not block the skilled plan or mimic confusion.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative the post-operative ear precautions, hearing-aid care, vertigo-safety measures, and the warning signs of a complication, with return-demonstration/teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on communication strategies for the hearing-impaired resident, vertigo fall-safety, and prompt reporting of ear pain/drainage/dizziness, with documented understanding.
