The dialysis-dependent resident is among the most medically complex in a SNF and commonly supports a skilled Part A stay. The skilled work is continuous: coordinating the dialysis schedule and communicating with the dialysis unit, assessing and protecting the vascular or peritoneal access, tracking the dry weight and the fluid-electrolyte balance between sessions, performing the post-dialysis assessment, and recognizing dialysis-related complications (hypotension, cramping, disequilibrium, access loss, or infection).
This overlay proves, for each billed day, that skilled dialysis-related observation, access care, management, or teaching was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. Use it with the Genitourinary/Renal reference, which supplies the base renal content.
