Continence care, catheter use, and urinary-tract infections are core quality and infection-control concerns. The facility must ensure a resident who enters without an indwelling catheter is not catheterized unless medically necessary, that appropriate treatment and services are provided to prevent UTIs and restore continence as possible, and that incontinence care protects the skin (F690).
The documentation must show the individualized toileting program, the medical justification and care of any indwelling catheter (a catheter for convenience is prohibited), CAUTI prevention, and UTI recognition — remembering that elders often present with new confusion rather than classic urinary symptoms.
