Skilled interventions

  • Administer and monitor IV medications through the line with pre/post assessment; care for and assess the central/peripheral access each shift.
  • Manage the drain (output, patency, site, securement) and maintain the closed system; recognize complications early with escalation.
  • Change dressings per protocol using correct technique and document the site assessment and any complication.

Teaching / training (to mastery)

  • Teach the resident/representative line/drain precautions, the signs of a complication, and mobility with the device, with teach-back.
  • Train CNAs on line/drain protection, output/site reporting, and prompt reporting of a complication, with documented understanding.
