Blood disorders drive skilled care in several concrete ways. Anemia may require blood-product transfusion — a covered skilled procedure with pre-, intra-, and post-transfusion monitoring for reactions. Thrombocytopenia requires bleeding-precaution management and bleeding surveillance. Neutropenia (often chemotherapy-related) requires infection precautions and, critically, the recognition of a neutropenic fever, which is an oncologic emergency. The skilled work is the transfusion and its monitoring, the bleeding and infection surveillance, and the management of the cytopenia.
This module proves, on the days it applies, that skilled transfusion, hematologic observation, or precaution management was reasonable, necessary, and part of the daily skilled need under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The hematologic assessment is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed. Anticoagulation routes to its overlay; transfusion access to Lines/Drains/Devices; sepsis to the Sepsis overlay.
