Technique

  • Take a structured sleep history — hours, latency, awakenings and their causes, early waking, and the daytime impact.
  • Screen for sleep-disordered breathing (for example STOP-Bang) when snoring, witnessed apneas, or excessive daytime sleepiness are present.
  • Review sleep hygiene and the sleep environment.
  • Identify contributing factors and reconcile them with the medication regimen and the diagnosis.
  • Evaluate the safety and effectiveness of any sleep aid, and check CPAP adherence and the interface where applicable.
