1. Purpose and clinical relevance

Swallowing is a core skilled focus because dysphagia is common after stroke, head-and-neck surgery, and in neuromuscular and advanced disease, and it is a leading, preventable cause of aspiration pneumonia. The skilled work is the swallowing/aspiration-risk assessment (including recognizing silent aspiration), the management of aspiration precautions and diet texture, the coordination of the speech-therapy swallow evaluation, and the safe progression of the diet as swallowing recovers.

This module proves, on the days it applies, that skilled swallowing observation, aspiration-precaution and diet management, or swallow teaching was reasonable, necessary, needed daily, and available only in a SNF under Pub. 100-02 Chapter 8. The swallowing assessment is the same as in home care; the coverage spine is re-pointed. Weight/intake detail routes to the Nutrition reference; the neuro cause to Neurological; aspiration to Respiratory.
