Indwelling lines, drains, and devices are a strong and defensible basis for skilled home health: central-line dressing changes, port access, drain management, and home infusion all require sterile technique and the judgment to recognize occlusion, infection, dislodgement, and embolic complications. Documentation that records “line intact” without the skilled assessment and care behind it does not prove a nurse was required; an assessment that maintains the device, recognizes a complication, and acts on it does.
The purpose of this module is to give the clinician the skilled framework — device-site assessment, patency and securement, sterile dressing change, output measurement, and complication recognition across vascular, enteral, and drainage devices — and the chartable language that demonstrates skilled procedure, observation and assessment, teaching and training, and management and evaluation of the plan of care.
