Physician or provider notification Notify the provider for a new external-ear infection, persistent otalgia or drainage, a hearing-aid problem the patient cannot resolve, or a new functional-hearing decline; document the finding, the time, the orders received, and the follow-through.
Escalate emergently — to urgent ENT or EMS — for sudden sensorineural hearing loss, vertigo with central neurologic signs, or mastoiditis, and document the closed loop.
