Document each teaching point with topic, method, audience, and measured mastery (teach-back percentage or return-demonstration result), per Foundations — Teach-back and return demonstration.

  • The analgesic regimen — around-the-clock versus as-needed dosing, not exceeding ordered limits, and timing for activity.
  • Opioid safety — secure storage, sedation and fall awareness, avoiding alcohol and other sedatives, and constipation prophylaxis.
  • Nonpharmacologic strategies and how to apply them.
  • Recognizing and reporting under-treatment, adverse effects, and red-flag features.
  • The pain goal and how to use the plan to maintain function and sleep.
