Pain at or below the patient's stated goal.
Function maintained — ambulation, activities of daily living, sleep, and appetite at baseline.
The analgesic regimen tolerated, with no untreated adverse effects.
Bowel function maintained on an opioid regimen (no untreated constipation).
Sedation at an acceptable level; respiratory status at baseline on an opioid regimen.
The patient verbalizes and uses an effective pain-management plan.
