9. Patient and caregiver teaching

Document each teaching point with topic, method, audience, and measured mastery (teach-back percentage or return-demonstration result), per Foundations — Teach-back and return demonstration.

  • Rescue versus controller inhaler: when and how to use each, and rinsing the mouth after an inhaled corticosteroid.
  • Inhaler, spacer, and nebulizer technique with return demonstration.
  • Action-plan thresholds (for example respiratory rate above 28, SpO2 below 90% on usual oxygen, or a change in sputum color or amount) and whom to call.
  • Oxygen safety: no open flame, staying 5–10 feet from heat sources, and no smoking.
  • Pulse-oximeter self-use when appropriate: timing, interpretation, and escalation.
  • Smoking-cessation support; activity pacing and energy conservation.
