  • Safe-swallow strategies — small bites and sips, chin position or the maneuver ordered, no talking while eating, and alternating solids and liquids as directed — with return demonstration.
  • Correct upright positioning for meals and remaining upright for a period afterward.
  • IDDSI-texture preparation and thickened-liquid mixing, verified by return demonstration.
  • Caregiver feeding technique — pacing, bite and sip size, and watching for cues of difficulty — with return demonstration.
  • The signs of aspiration and when to stop feeding and call, and what to do for choking.
  • When to call the agency versus when to activate EMS (e.g. choking with airway obstruction, sudden dysphagia with neurologic signs).
