The mouth is easy to overlook and consequential when it is: oral candidiasis and painful lesions drive down intake, poor oral hygiene feeds aspiration pneumonia, and a few oral and throat findings are airway emergencies. The skilled value of this domain is recognizing the oral source of poor intake or infection, protecting a fragile mouth, and knowing which oral or throat findings threaten the airway. Documentation that records “mouth okay” without an oral exam does not prove a nurse was required; recognizing thrush limiting intake, or an airway threat, does.
The purpose of this module is to give the clinician the framework for the oral, dental, and pharyngeal examination and oral-hygiene assessment — and the chartable language that demonstrates observation and assessment and teaching and training, with swallowing mechanics routed to Taste/Swallowing and intake routed to Nutrition.
