Technique

• Inspect the mouth in good light with the dentures removed; examine the mucosa, tongue (including under it), gingiva, and the hard and soft palate.
• Look specifically for white plaques that wipe off to leave a raw base, suggesting candidiasis, and for any lesion that does not heal.
• Inspect and gently assess the dentition for loose or broken teeth and dental pain, and check denture fit and for pressure sores.
• Inspect the pharynx for erythema, exudate, swelling, or asymmetry, using a tongue blade and light.
• Assess mucosal moisture and hydration and identify contributors to dry mouth.
• Assess the oral-hygiene status and observe mouth care where the patient is dependent.
• For any airway-threatening swelling, drooling, or difficulty with secretions, escalate rather than continuing the exam.
• Relate oral findings to intake and comfort and coordinate with Nutrition and Taste/Swallowing.
