Most neck findings are minor, but the neck houses the airway and the thyroid, and a few problems here are emergencies: airway compromise from a mass or swelling, thyroid storm, myxedema coma, and the hypocalcemia that can follow thyroidectomy. The skilled value of this domain is surveillance — recognizing a compressive or decompensating process and the post-operative complications that home patients carry. Documentation that records “neck okay” without the exam does not prove a nurse was required; recognizing a compressive mass, a thyroid emergency, or post-operative hypocalcemia does.
The purpose of this module is to give the clinician the framework for the structural neck and thyroid exam, tracheal-position and airway surveillance, neck-mass assessment, and post-thyroidectomy monitoring — and the chartable language that demonstrates observation and assessment and teaching and training, with systemic thyroid disease routed to Endocrine/Metabolic.
